James has specialized in complex California Workers’ Compensation claims since 2007. Before joining Boxer+Gerson, he was a Junior Partner at a statewide workers’ compensation firm, where he helped clients expeditiously resolve claims without unnecessary litigation disputes. He previously worked as a Litigation Associate at San Francisco law firm, focusing on Workers’ Compensation, Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, and subrogation claims, and gained extensive experience litigating asbestos-related claims.
After growing up in Iowa and graduating from high school in Wyoming, James served in the U.S. Navy. This eventually brought him to the Alameda and the Bay Area. While he was studying at UC Berkeley, a roommate caused a fire in their rent-controlled apartment. Defending his legal rights as a tenant, James not only managed to avoid eviction but successfully negotiated a new lease in a better apartment for the same rent without the troublesome roommate —and was made the new building’s onsite manager! This experience shaped a legal philosophy that James still holds dear today: by learning the law and negotiating in good faith, it’s possible to create an outcome that delivers good results to all parties.
Outside of the office, James spends most of his time fixing and landscaping the East Bay home he shares with his wife, while trying to remember his prior career as an electrician.
