Boxer & Gerson attorneys Justin Litvack and Deirdre Mochel teamed up to provide an overview of the workers’ compensation system to a group of shop stewards and business agents for the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 29 on March 14. The group gathered from around the Bay Area at a Local 29 union hall in Oakland.
The discussion touched on workers’ rights under California workers’ compensation law, with a focus on medical treatment and how injured workers can better protect themselves from defense tactics seeking to undermine their claims.
OPEIU Local 29 represents nearly 6,000 employees at more than 200 workplaces in Northern California. The local recently participated with numerous other labor unions in the country in an unprecedented bargaining process that broke new ground in labor relations and established a model for health care in cooperation with Kaiser Permanente.
Local 29 is part of the international OPEIU that was chartered in 1945. Its 104,000 members are spread across all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, making it one of the larger unions within the AFL-CIO.
The OPEIU represents both employees and independent contractors in a wide variety of industries, including banking and credit unions, insurance, higher education, shipping, hospitals, medical clinics, utilities, transportation, hotels, administrative offices and more.
Litvack and Mochel are part of a large group of Boxer & Gerson attorneys who provide regular seminars and other educational events on workers’ comp and personal injury law to unions and other groups around the Bay Area.
Presentations can be scheduled for either day or evening hours. Call 510-835-8870 for more information.
