NOTE: BOXER & GERSON STRONGLY SUPPORTS ASSEMBLY BILL 5 AND ITS INCREASED PROTECTIONS FOR CALIFORNIA WORKERS IN THIS UNCERTAIN ECONOMY
Centro Legal de la Raza, the Oakland-based organization dedicated to expanding access to the legal system in all its manifestations for people of color, conducted a week-long “Diversity Legal Pipeline” event in early July that culminated in a “Law Firms and Diversity Panel” on the conference’s final afternoon. Boxer & Gerson Workers’ Compensation Specialist Maria Sager joined two other attorneys in sharing her perspectives on a law career with the young people in attendance.
The program was part of Central Legal’s “Youth Law Academy” (YLA), an intensive three-year after-school program for Oakland teens that includes leadership development, mentoring with judges and attorneys, college application assistance, financial aid application assistance, SAT preparation, and a mock trial. YLA’s program support continues after students graduate from high school, with mentoring and case management services that help students navigate the challenges of college and possible transition to law school.
