Boxer & Gerson, LLP’s Workers’ Comp Practice Group Partner John Harrigan visited Machinists Local 1173 in Concord on March 10 to brief the membership on an overview of workers’ comp and recent developments in case law. Local 1173 is part of District 190 of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 14,000 workers from Fresno to Eureka and San Francisco to Reno, and beyond. It is part of the larger International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, representing some 720,000 workers across North America. It was founded in 1888 when 19 machinists met in an Atlanta, Georgia locomotive pit to form the initial union. Their goal, among other things, was to improve upon their wages of 20 to 25 cents an hour for a 10-hour day.
