Boxer & Gerson continued its longtime support of Centro Legal de la Raza, the Oakland-based legal aid organization for Latino, immigrant and low-income Bay Area residents, by sponsoring the group’s 46th anniversary celebration at the Scottish Rite Center in Oakland. B&G attorneys Maria Sager, Jenny Jerez and Dennis Popalardo all attended the event, with Sager acting in her official capacity as Centro Legal Board of Directors President to officially commend Senator Barbara Boxer, who was honored with the group’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Centro Legal de la Raza was founded in 1969 by a group of Latino law students from UC Berkeley’s Boalt School of Law, and has since gone on to serve thousands of residents whom almost surely would otherwise go unserved in the legal system. Many clients include monolingual Spanish speakers.
The organization also operates the Youth Law Academy (YLA), now in its 10th year of offering financial and emotional support to low-income youth who harbor dreams of pursuing higher education. More than 90 percent of YLA students are the first members of their family to attend college.
