Boxer & Gerson Elevates Five New Partners

Boxer & Gerson announced today that the firm is naming five new partners, effectively doubling the number of partners. The firm integrates a long-standing applicants’ workers’ compensation practice with personal injury and employment law specialties. Of the five new partners, two represent plaintiffs in employment discrimination, harassment, retaliation and whistleblower lawsuits, while three practice before the Worker’s Compensation Appeals Board.

According to managing partner John M. Harrigan, I am not aware of any other firm in Northern California that integrates civil and workers’ compensation practices as deliberately and completely as we do. In the context of the attacks on the workers’ compensation system, our firm is ramping up to pursue collateral avenues of attack to protect the interests of working people.

The new partners are Bert S. Arnold, Jean K. Hyams, Gary J. Lee, Leslie F. Levy, and Ralph W. Mann.

Bert S. Arnold has practiced law since 1986, including six years with Boxer & Gerson. A 1986 graduate of San Francisco Law School, Mr. Arnold spent five years practicing criminal defense with Arnold & Dunbar. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Mr. Arnold is a graduate of the University of California at Davis (Class of 1979) with a degree in Government. He is a member of the California Applicants’ Attorney Association. Mr. Arnold currently serves on The California State Bar Executive Committee for Workers’ Compensation. He is listed as a Northern California Super Lawyer for 2005 in San Francisco Magazine.

Jean K. Hyams litigates cases on behalf of employees as part of the firm’s employment law practice group. She joined the firm in 1999 from the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education, the federal agency charged with enforcing federal laws prohibiting discrimination in education on the basis of race, ethnicity, age, gender, and disability. Following her graduation from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1989, Ms. Hyams spent ten years as a solo practitioner and partner at the law firm of Hyams & Hall. Ms. Hyams is a graduate of Wellesley College (Class of 1982), where she majored in Political Science. She is a member of the board of the California Employment Lawyers Association, and a member of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom, and the National Lawyers Guild. She is listed as a Northern California Super Lawyer for 2005 in San Francisco Magazine.

Gary J. Lee joined Boxer & Gerson as a workers’ compensation attorney in 2003. Formerly a partner with Mullen & Filippi, Mr. Lee’s practice has focused on workers’ compensation law, an area in which he has over fifteen years of experience, representing both applicants and defendants. An alumnus of the University of San Francisco Law School (Class of 1984), Mr. Lee interned with the National Labor Relations Board during law school and served a two-year judicial clerkship with the United States Department of Labor, Office of Administrative Law Judges following law school. Mr. Lee is a member of the Alameda County Bar Association, and is a State Bar Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation law.

Leslie F. Levy brings civil rights lawsuits on behalf of employees as part of Boxer & Gerson’s employment practice group. A graduate of Hastings College of the Law (Class of 1982), Ms. Levy started her own practice directly out of law school. Over the next 17 years as a solo or in partnership with one or two other attorneys, Ms. Levy built a civil rights practice, which included pioneering lawsuits against sexually-harassing landlords and perpetrators of violence against women and children. In 2001, she joined Boxer & Gerson, where her practice focuses on employment law. Ms. Levy has served as an adjunct professor at both the University of San Francisco School of Law and New College of the Law, and is the author of several articles on law and violence against women. In 1999, Ms. Levy received an award for distinguished service to women from Hastings Law School’s Clara Foltz Feminist Association. As an attorney at Boxer & Gerson, Ms. Levy’s practice focuses on employment discrimination, civil suits for sexual abuse, and sexual harassment in housing and education. She is listed as a Northern California Super Lawyer for 2005 in San Francisco Magazine.

Ralph W. Mann joined Boxer & Gerson in 1999. He has practiced exclusively in the area of workers’ compensation law, always on the side of the injured worker. Mr. Mann graduated from the University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law (Class of 1994) and received an LLM from the University of San Diego, School of Law (Class of 1995). Mr. Mann is a Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation and is a member of the California Applicants’ Attorney Association.
