Biography:
Selected by National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals and recognized as one of the best lawyers in America for the past 12 years, Michael Gerson understands that people who have suffered injuries while on the job need an advocate to guide them through the workers’ compensation process with compassion and care. He knows that his clients are often dealing with financial, family and employment issues in addition to their medical problems. Michael always works with the goal of relieving as much stress from their situations as possible.
Michael has been certified by the State Bar of California as a specialist in workers’ compensation since 1980, and is well-versed in the complexities of the system. Understanding that injured workers must also deal with Social Security, state disability, pension plans, unemployment claims, job programs, insurance, doctors, judges and more, he shepherds his clients through the legal maze from start to finish.
As a named partner of Boxer & Gerson, LLP, Michael has made it his mission to ensure that compassion, caring and true concern for clients remain central to the firm’s core values. In his 30 years at the firm, he has represented a wide variety of workers and their families, passionately protecting their rights.
Michael has been recognized by San Francisco Magazine as one of Northern California’s Super Lawyers for many years, and was selected to be listed on the East Bay Top 95 lawyers in all fields of law. He has had the privilege of arguing cases before the California Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, and has presented matters before the State Workers’ Compensation Board, the Federal Workers’ Compensation Board and the Social Security Administration. He is a past president of the California Applicants’ Attorneys Association and still sits on their Board of Governors. He was on the program faculty of the UCSF Medical School Department of Occupational Medicine, and has lectured before the UC Berkeley Extension Division, the Industrial Claims Association, the California Continuing Education of the Bar, and the Conference of Workers’ Compensation Judges, as well as many other groups.
A graduate of the University of San Francisco Law School, Michael began his practice as in-house counsel at Pacific Gas & Electric before joining the firm that is now Boxer & Gerson, LLP in 1977. A Bay Area native, he grew up in Alameda and attended St. Joseph Notre Dame High School there. When not practicing law, he enjoys travel, gardening, hiking and spending time with his wife, Jamie, and his two children, Andrew and Carly.
