Biography:
After practicing workers’ compensation law for 30 years, John Harrigan still enjoys "leveling the playing field" for injured workers who are fighting insurance companies to receive their health benefits. He relishes the opportunity to help people who otherwise would have difficulty dealing with the system.
As John was beginning his law practice, he knew he wanted to work on behalf of individuals rather than businesses or large corporations. He believes that the deck is now stacked against workers more than ever, and is honored to represent workers such as police officers, fire fighters, teachers, carpenters, machinists, pipe fitters and many more. He finds Boxer & Gerson, LLP’s strong union relationships to be a particularly satisfying aspect of the job.
Certified as a specialist in workers’ comp by the State Bar of California, John brings a mixture of litigation, communication and negotiation skills to his cases. He enjoys his field for its fast-paced nature and the quick decisions it requires, as well as the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the medical field. In addition to workers’ compensation, he also represents individuals in appeals to obtain Social Security disability benefits.
In 2006 and 2007, John was recognized as one of Northern California’s Super Lawyers in workers’ comp by San Francisco Magazine. He represents workers before the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board and the Office of Hearings and Appeals of the Social Security Administration. He has also served on the Alameda County Bar Association Court Appointed Attorney Committee and has been an arbitrator for many years, including the last ten years on attorney/client disputes on behalf of the State Bar of California and the Alameda County Bar Association.
John is actively involved in the National Fragile X Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to combat this genetic disorder. After helping found the organization and serving on the foundation’s Board of Directors for 10 years (including four years as president), he now is president of their Board of Trustees. In this role he leads fundraising drives and lobbies for increased medical research funding in Washington, DC.
He received his law degree from Golden Gate University and has a B.A. in History from Union College. Now the managing partner of Boxer & Gerson, he has been with the firm since 1987. Before joining Boxer & Gerson, John had his own criminal defense and workers’ comp practice. When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his family and coaching his children’s Little League Challenger Division baseball and softball teams.
